KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim vowed that Malaysia would remain steadfast in its principles amid criticism over both foreign and domestic matters, saying the government would not back down from defending the nation’s interests.
Speaking at a special press conference in Putrajaya today, Anwar addressed recent developments in Myanmar following the recent elections, stressing that Malaysia would continue to monitor the situation carefully.
He said any steps taken must reduce violence, avoid deepening divisions, and preserve the possibility of an inclusive and credible political pathway.
On the Gaza crisis, the Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia’s opposition to large-scale violence and condemned Israel’s recognition of the so-called Somaliland region.
“We express our categorical opposition to any attempt to use Somaliland or any other territory as a destination for the forcible transfer or displacement of the Palestinian people from Gaza,” he said, adding that such actions violate international law and humanitarian principles and would perpetuate injustice rather than contribute to peace.
Anwar made it clear that Malaysia would not yield to external pressures.
“We will not accept threats from any side, and we will be firm in dealing with this problem, whether as friends or opponents,” he said.
Domestically, Anwar addressed criticism over coalition management, administrative actions, and oversight of the judiciary, military leadership, and public service.
He emphasised that all decisions were made with transparency, careful planning, and coordination with coalition partners.
Anwar also discussed Malaysia’s ongoing mediation efforts in regional disputes involving Thailand and Cambodia, clarifying that Malaysia’s role was to assist and ensure the cessation of hostilities, while the final decisions remain with the parties involved.
“The criticisms levied against us are based on ignorance and prejudice,” Anwar said.
“All our actions—from the KL Accord to border meetings and diplomatic engagements—have been conducted with full understanding, participation, and agreement by all relevant parties.
“I am grateful for the strengthened regional cooperation. Malaysia will continue to defend its principles in both foreign and domestic affairs.” – December 30, 2025
