KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is carrying out an investigation into Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) RM58.45 million procurement tenders to see whether there were elements of non-compliance and weaknesses in procedures.
MACC Governance Investigation Division director Datuk Mohd Zaki Hassan said the investigation is to determine whether negligence occurred, as raised in the Auditor-General’s Report (LKAN) on July 21.
He said an investigation file has been opened regarding the case and the probe is still ongoing.
“This is to identify if there were weaknesses or non-compliance as stated in the Auditor-General’s Report (LKAN) on July 21, which revealed that three out of seven UKM procurement tenders worth a total of RM58.45 million did not follow the required procurement procedures,” he said, as reported by local media.
In November, MACC Senior Investigation Division director Datuk Zainul Darus said five individuals had already been called to give their statements regarding the procurement investigation involving UKM.
The July 2025 Auditor-General’s Report revealed serious irregularities and weaknesses in UKM’s tender process. It said UKM’s Tender Procurement Committee selected companies that were not recommended by the Technical Evaluation Committee, Financial Evaluation Committee and Pre-Tender Committee.
The report also noted that the Pre-Tender Committee approved a company that had already failed at the evaluation stage for upgrading and replacing 16 lifts.
It added that the Vice Chancellor, as chairman of the Tender Procurement Committee, is responsible for ensuring proper governance in line with UKM’s constitution and the principle of duty of care.
UKM was also found not to have appointed a Finance Ministry representative to the committee, while a Higher Education Ministry representative who was appointed did not attend meetings related to the three tenders. – January 1, 2026
