KUALA LUMPUR – Ahead of next week’s 2025 Umno General Assembly, the party has received 662 motions from 175 divisions. Notably, there were no motions suggesting a withdrawal from the Unity Government.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki shared that these motions were collected from last year’s Umno Division conferences, with 175 out of 191 divisions participating. Perak recorded the highest number of motions at 133, Bernama reported.
“The motions predominantly focus on politics, religion, education, and the economy. One of the most frequently submitted motions is the call for justice and a full pardon for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” he said during a press conference today.
The 2025 Umno General Assembly is set to take place from January 14 to 17 at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur, after two postponements in August and November to accommodate preparations for the 17th Sabah State Election.
Asyraf Wajdi noted that the UMNO Divisions did not submit any motions regarding cooperation with other political parties, including PAS. He also mentioned that the party will not prevent any spokesperson from expressing views or grassroots sentiments during the debates.
He confirmed that 6,412 delegates have registered for the assembly, with 2,928 for the main session, 1,165 for the Wanita wing, 1,173 for the Youth wing, and 1,146 for the Puteri wing.
Representatives from MCA, MIC, and Friends of Barisan Nasional have confirmed their attendance for the opening ceremony. However, Asyraf Wajdi clarified that no representatives from other parties within the Unity Government were invited, as the focus is solely on internal party matters, allowing UMNO delegates and wing spokespersons to express their opinions openly.
The assembly will commence on January 13 with several “warm-up” programmes, including the Mutaqqaf Ilmuan Islam (Islamic Scholars Forum), the Umno Patriotic School Convocation, and the Digital Era Political Symposium.
The opening of the Wanita, Youth, and Puteri General Assemblies is scheduled for January 14 at Dewan Merdeka, followed by the respective wing conferences the next day.
The main Umno General Assembly will officially begin on January 16 with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by the UMNO President’s policy speech and subsequent debate sessions. – January 9, 2026
