MIC to decide BN exit after Thaipusam: Saravanan

Saravanan says final decision expected in February; ties with BN remain 'harmonious' for now

KUALA LUMPUR – MIC is expected to make a final decision on whether to remain in Barisan Nasional (BN) or leave the coalition as early as February, after the Thaipusam celebrations.

Deputy President Datuk Seri M Saravanan said the party’s supreme council (MT) will determine MIC’s position ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).

“So, we will make a decision after Thaipusam… maybe early or mid‑February. In January, there is the Umno General Assembly… so we will settle that first,” he told Berita Harian.

Saravanan, who is also Tapah MP, made the remarks at a ceremony to hand over agricultural equipment to B40 traders in his constituency at the MIC Tapah building, Perak. Also present was BN Tapah chairman and acting Umno Tapah chief, Khairul Azmi Ghazali.

Despite speculation that MIC may exit BN, Saravanan stressed that ties between the two parties remain cordial.

“So far, everything looks peaceful. Let’s maintain that harmony. For now, MIC is still with BN,” he said. – January 10, 2026
