PAS accepts Muhyiddin’s resignation, PN to convene emergency meeting on new chairman

Hadi says coalition must formally confirm vacancy and appoint successor under PN constitution

KUALA LUMPUR – PAS has accepted Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as Perikatan Nasional chairman and called for an emergency coalition meeting to appoint a replacement.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party respects Muhyiddin’s decision to step down effective January 1 and expressed appreciation for his leadership and contributions to PN.

Hadi, who is also PN deputy chairman, said the emergency meeting should be convened without delay as more than 10 days have passed since the resignation took effect.

In a statement this morning, Hadi said the meeting is required under Clause 8.3(i)(b) of the PN Constitution to formally accept and confirm the resignation and to appoint a new chairman. No date was given for the meeting.

Muhyiddin announced his resignation on December 29, shortly after tensions between Bersatu and PAS linked to the Perlis political crisis. He has since stressed that he remains Bersatu president and that the party will stay in PN.

Despite calls from some Bersatu leaders for him to reconsider, Hadi later confirmed that PN’s next chairman will come from PAS, not Bersatu.

Several PAS leaders have been mentioned as possible successors, including Hadi himself, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Sanusi has ruled himself out and named Samsuri as a deserving candidate, although Samsuri has yet to comment. PN leaders have cautioned against speculation, saying discussions will be decided collectively at the coalition level. – January 11, 2026
