Bersatu did not betray, sabotage PAS in Perlis: Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR – Parti Bersatu has denied betraying PAS or being involved in the political crisis in Perlis, its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

Muhyiddin said Bersatu did not play any role in sabotaging PAS, which resulted in the resignation of Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

“We did nothing. Neither I nor the party was involved in this matter. Many parties in Perlis have acknowledged that we were not involved.

“When a decision has been made by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, it is the absolute prerogative of the Raja of Perlis and must be respected,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after chairing the Bersatu Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) meeting last night.

The political crisis in Perlis erupted after eight State Assembly members (ADUNs), comprising three from PAS and five from Bersatu, were reported to have withdrawn their support for Shukri’s leadership.

As a result, three PAS ADUNs, Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji) were immediately expelled from the party.

Following this, the Perlis State Assembly Speaker, Rus’sele Eizan, declared the three seats vacant but later confirmed that the notification regarding the need to hold by-elections in the Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji constituencies had been withdrawn.

According to him, the decision was made pursuant to the proviso to Clause (5) of Article 55 of the Perlis State Constitution and had been communicated to the Perlis Election Commission (EC). – January 13, 2026
