KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into the circulation of false and 3R-linked claims surrounding a viral accident in Selangor, warning that the issue has been twisted to inflame racial sentiment and disrupt public order.
In a statement today, the regulator cited clarification from the Selangor contingent of the Royal Malaysia Police, which established that the incident arose from a personal dispute over land and access, with no elements of gangsterism or racial motive involved.
MCMC said attempts to frame the matter along racial or religious lines were misleading and irresponsible.
Digital forensics conducted by the commission uncovered signs of coordinated inauthentic behaviour, with near-identical posts pushed repeatedly across Facebook and TikTok within a short timeframe to shape public perception.
Authorities have so far placed 40 Facebook accounts and 10 TikTok accounts under scrutiny to assist investigations.
The commission stressed it would not tolerate the spread of fabricated or inflammatory content. Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 prohibits the dissemination of false, threatening or grossly offensive material intended to harass or alarm others.
Investigations are ongoing, with enforcement action to follow if breaches are confirmed.
The public has been urged to refrain from amplifying unverified claims and to rely on official statements from the authorities. – February 13, 2026
