Hamzah still opposition leader in Parliament: Takiyuddin

With no top leaders in Perikatan Nasional leadership, Bersatu’s sacking of its deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin has had little impact on his standing in the opposition coalition, where PAS is now dominant

KUALA LUMPUR — Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin remains the opposition leader in Parliament despite his sacking from Bersatu, according to Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

This is because he is still an opposition MP, Takiyuddin who is also PAS secretary-general, said.

“So he will remain as PN’s opposition leader,” New Straits Times reported him saying in Kota Baru, Kelantan, today.

Takiyuddin also said no offer of membership has been made by PAS to Hamzah, although he is welcomed to join the party.

The Kota Baru MP also stressed PAS’ neutrality in Bersatu’s internal turmoil, saying PAS would not interfere.

“It doesn’t mean PAS is siding with Hamzah,” he added.

Hamzah, who was expelled from Bersatu along with 16 other members, posted a photo of himself having tea with PAS leaders in Terengganu yesterday, around the same time Bersatu announced the sackings.

Bersatu’s disciplinary council’s decision against Hamzah was over breaches of the party constitution involving attacks against party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Bersatu now has no top leaders in the PN leadership, as Muhyiddin resigned as coalition chairman effective January 1. His ally Datuk Seri Azmin Ali also resigned as PN secretary-general. However, Muhyiddin remains as Bersatu president and Azmin its secretary-general.

PAS and Bersatu had been at odds over how to fill the PN leadership vacancy caused by Muhyiddin’s resignation, which followed political turmoil in Perlis late last year.

Takiyuddin said previously that the heads of PN’s component parties will be meeting this month during Ramadan to discuss the PN chairmanship. – February 14, 2026
