Hadi: Hamzah free to join any party, PAS focused on saving PN

Opposition coalition to meet on Sunday to decide Opposition Leader and chairman posts

KUALA LUMPUR — PAS is not focused on which party Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin will join, as its immediate focus is to stabilise Perikatan Nasional (PN) following political turmoil in coalition member, Bersatu, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

The PAS president said it is up to Hamzah to decide which party he wanted to join, or even if he wanted to establish his own party.

“The most important thing is that we save Perikatan Nasional,” Hadi told reporters in Marang, Terengganu, when asked about news that Hamzah had plans to join a “new home” next week.

Hadi added that the PN meeting this Sunday, where a new coalition chairman will be discussed, will also decide on other leadership positions, such as the Opposition Leader post held by Hamzah.

Hamzah was sacked from Bersatu a week ago, along with 16 other MPs from the party for going against party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. PAS previously said that Hamzah still remains the Opposition Leader in Parliament as he is still with the opposition bloc.

Hamzah is speculated to be joining another political party next week, according to Padang Rengas MP Azahari Hassan, who said he, too, would join Hamzah’s new “home”.

Muhyiddin resigned as PN chairman effective January 1. Calls for resignation as Bersatu president have followed, with critics citing his inability to lead the party.

Bersatu is now in turmoil with open displays of defiance by current members and leaders who support Hamzah, such as Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsuddin who resigned as Bersatu Masjid Tanah division chief, along with 39 other committee members.

About a dozen Bersatu division heads have also resigned, reportedly in Johor and Penang. – February 20, 2026
