KUALA LUMPUR – Independent men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has pledged his services to Malaysia’s Thomas Cup campaign, agreeing to compete without placing any conditions on the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

The Paris Olympic bronze medallist had recently been the subject of speculation over alleged demands for image rights fees, following his move into the professional ranks.

However, in a significant gesture of goodwill, Zii Jia has decided to set aside those considerations in a bid to help the national team end a 34-year wait for the prestigious title.

The Thomas Cup Finals will be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3.

In a statement released last night, Team LZJ confirmed that an understanding had been reached between both parties.

“It is with great pleasure that we announce Lee Zii Jia has reached an agreement with the BAM to be part of Malaysia’s 2026 Thomas Cup squad.

“Zii Jia has also agreed to waive his image rights fee in order to represent the country at the upcoming Thomas Cup, reflecting his commitment and dedication to Malaysia,” the statement read.

Zii Jia also conveyed his appreciation to BAM president Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz and performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei for their confidence in him.

“He would like to express his sincere appreciation to BAM for the trust placed in him to contribute to the nation’s cause.

“We hope this marks a new chapter for Zii Jia and BAM, moving forward together in the best interests of Malaysian badminton.”

Meanwhile, Chong Wei welcomed the development, describing Zii Jia’s return to the fold as a timely boost for the national squad.

He also extended an open invitation for the independent shuttler to train at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) whenever necessary, underlining BAM’s readiness to provide full support in the build-up to the finals. – February 24, 2026
