KUALA LUMPUR – Terengganu executive councillor, Datuk Hanafiah Mat, who was charged in court today over allegations of using his position for the benefit of his family, is not required to resign.
Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, stated that Hanafiah’s capacity as a state exco does not impede the prosecution or trial process.
He emphasised that Hanafiah, who also serves as chairman of the infrastructure, utilities and rural development committee, cannot be considered guilty until proven otherwise in court.
“The member of the State Executive Council in question is not required to resign, as his role as a state exco does not affect the prosecution or trial process.
“We are aware of the issue concerning a member of the State Executive Council who is currently at the stage of prosecution and trial.
“The state government remains committed to upholding integrity and fully respects the legal process that is ongoing.
“No one should be presumed guilty until proven in court. All parties are urged not to speculate or make premature judgments that could compromise the administration of justice,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier today, Hanafiah pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court to two charges of using his position for the benefit of his family in 2018 and 2020.
He is accused of abusing his office as a state Exco member and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of a government-linked company to have his two children appointed to positions in two state-owned subsidiaries.
Ahmad Samsuri called on all parties to remain calm and allow the legal system to carry out its duties professionally. — February 24, 2026
