KUALA LUMPUR – Independent Member of Parliament for Bukit Gantang, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal admitted that he did not vote on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years, today.
According to Syed Abu Hussin, this is because he wants the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to serve longer, not just two terms.
He explained that a vetting process already takes place during party elections and the general election (GE), so there is no need to limit the Prime Minister’s term.
“I disagree because if someone is good, let that person serve longer. Ten years is too short — maybe it could be 15 years.
“I am an Independent Member of Parliament and a supporter of PMX (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim). I want him to be Prime Minister longer because he is good,” he said when contacted by Scoop today.
Syed Abu Hussin said he attended the Dewan Rakyat sitting today but did not vote and left at 3pm.
“I disagree because if someone is good, let that person serve longer,” he said.
The Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years failed to secure the required two-thirds majority support in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, said the division vote saw 146 Members of Parliament in favour, 32 absent, and 44 abstaining. – March 2, 2026
