KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian who tragically died in a helicopter crash in the Philippines yesterday has been identified as Farm Fresh Bhd farm director Jacob Mathan.
The 35-year-old passed away following the crash in Pitilla, Rizal Province, at approximately 7.20am on Tuesday.
Managing director Loi Tuan Ee confirmed the news on Instagram, sharing his deep sorrow over the loss of a key and beloved member of the Farm Fresh family. The helicopter, which was on a routine flight to visit a potential farm site, reportedly encountered engine trouble before crashing.
“Our very own Jacob, a key and much-loved member of our Farm Fresh family, passed away at 7.20am this morning when the helicopter he travelled in crashed in Pitilla, Rizal Province, Philippines,” Loi said.
“What was expected to be a straightforward journey in a new helicopter took a tragic turn when they encountered engine trouble.”
Shawn Pu, the company’s CEO in the Philippines, was also on board and sustained injuries, though he is in stable condition.
Jacob had been with Farm Fresh for 13 years, starting as an intern at the Mawai farm and eventually rising to the role of farm director. Loi described him as someone with a strong sense of responsibility, a thirst for knowledge, and genuine kindness that extended to both colleagues and the livestock under his care.
Jacob played a vital role in strengthening the group’s dairy farm division and was instrumental in building strong working relationships with contractors, suppliers, and government agencies such as the Department of Veterinary Services and the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC).
“Jacob was truly a beloved and invaluable member of our Farm Fresh family. Our hearts are broken, and we grieve along with his family,” Loi said. Jacob leaves behind his wife, Amy, and their family.
The crash also claimed the life of a Filipino passenger, while another Malaysian was injured. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is investigating the incident, which took place at approximately 7.27am in a vacant lot.
Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines, Datuk Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, confirmed the identity of the deceased Malaysian and said consular assistance is being provided to the family. “The embassy is liaising with local authorities to facilitate the necessary consular arrangements,” he said. The injured Malaysian is receiving hospital treatment, with embassy officers offering support.
The Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported that the CAAP’s Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board is handling the investigation, with further details expected to be released soon. – March 4, 2026
