KUALA LUMPUR – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has taken legal action against 16 former MPs and assemblymen, accusing them of breaching a RM10 million bond after quitting the party six years ago.
PKR, through its secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, filed two suits at the High Court on Feb 19 and Feb 27 via law firm Nav & Co.
Among those named as defendants are Baru Bian, Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, Datuk Mansor Othman, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Datuk R Santhara Kumar, Abdul Yunus Jamhari, Datuk Azman Nasrudin, Dr Afif Bahardin, Chong Fat Full, Daroyah Alwi, Haniza Mohamed Talha, Muhammad Hilman Idham, Muhammad Jailani Khamis, Robert Ling Kui Ee and Zulkifli Ibrahim.
According to the statement of claim, each defendant had signed a bond agreeing to pay RM10 million within seven days if they resigned, joined another party, or became independents after contesting under PKR’s banner in the 14th General Election (GE14).
“However, on Feb 24, 2020, each defendant ceased to remain a member of the party after being elected under the party’s banner. They also expressed support for a political coalition other than PKR,” the party said.
PKR terminated their memberships on March 11, 2020, with certificates issued on March 16 to confirm the decision.
“Due to the matters pleaded above, each defendant has breached the bond, thereby triggering the obligation to pay RM10 million, which must be paid within seven days. Through a letter dated July 28, 2020, PKR issued a formal demand to each defendant for payment of the amount, but the defendants failed to pay,” the party stated.
PKR argued the bond was designed to protect the party and prevent risks of defection. It is now seeking court orders for each defendant to pay RM10 million, along with costs, interest and any other relief deemed fit.
Case management for the two suits has been fixed for March 17 and March 27. – March 6, 2026
