I never abandoned Umno, ready to fight again if suspension is lifted: Hishammuddin

KUALA LUMPUR – Suspended Umno member Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said he has never abandoned the party despite serving a six-year suspension as he also welcomed the leadership’s decision to reopen the party’s doors to members who were previously sacked or suspended, without any conditions.

“What is important now is that I have never run away from the party or attacked the leadership. So tomorrow, if the leadership is truly sincere and they withdraw my suspension, I will continue to fight for Umno,” he stressed.

Hishammuddin was suspended from the Umno in January 2023 for six years, equivalent to two terms of the party’s Supreme Council.

Last Friday, party president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi invited former Umno members to return to the party in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan, describing it as an opportunity to mend relationships and strengthen unity within the party.

“In the spirit of Ramadan, which embodies mercy and forgiveness, past mistakes and differences should be forgiven so that we can open a new chapter and rebuild the larger Umno family,” he said in a statement.

Following the call, former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin indicated that he is considering returning to the party under Umno’s “Rumah Bangsa” initiative. — March 12, 2026
