Hamzah to be replaced as opposition leader by PAS before month-end: Samsuri

PN chairman Ahmad Samsuri says the Larut MP will remain in post until successor is finalised

KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) will appoint a new opposition leader from PAS to replace Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin before the end of the month.

PN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said Hamzah, who is the former Bersatu deputy president, would retain his role as opposition leader until the process is finalised.

“There are a couple of processes that still need to be completed … once a decision is made, it will be communicated to the Speaker,” he told reporters after chairing a PN Supreme Council meeting here today.

Hamzah, who is Larut MP, was expelled from Bersatu on 13 February. His continued role as opposition leader has drawn calls from Bersatu leaders for him to step down.

On 22 February, PN Chief Whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan stated that coalition members had proposed PAS take over the opposition leader position, as it holds the largest number of parliamentary seats within the alliance.

In a separate announcement, Ahmad Samsuri also confirmed Takiyuddin’s appointment as PN secretary-general, succeeding Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who resigned effective 1 January 2026.

Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, Kedah Menteri Besar, has been named PN treasurer-general, a role vacant since 11 December 2024 following Ahmad Samsuri’s resignation. Sanusi’s former position as PN election director will now be held by Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin. – March 14, 2026
