KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has expressed willingness to step aside as Opposition Leader if the majority of MPs within the opposition bloc no longer support him.

Hamzah, who is Larut MP, stressed that the position depends on the collective backing of opposition MPs and requires close collaboration to ensure Parliament can effectively perform its checks and balances on the government.

“It is not determined by any single party acting alone. If opposition MPs no longer want me as Opposition Leader, I accept that as the voice of the majority,” he said.

He also addressed criticisms over his meetings with Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, asking, “If I am removed for meeting Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, what about those who openly wish to align with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim?” BH Online reported.

On Saturday, Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Moktar said the coalition would announce a new Opposition Leader from PAS by the end of the month. Until then, Hamzah, who was also the former Bersatu Deputy President, will continue in the role.

“There are a few processes that still need to be completed … once a decision is made, it will be communicated to the Speaker,” Samsuri said.

Hamzah was expelled from Bersatu on February 13, raising questions about his continued position as Opposition Leader, with Bersatu leaders urging him to resign.

On February 22,, PN Chief Whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the coalition’s component parties had proposed PAS take over the role, given that the party holds the largest number of parliamentary seats within PN. – March 15, 2026
