KUALA LUMPUR – A recent social media update by national shuttler Soh Wooi Yik has ignited speculation over a possible move into the professional ranks.
The 2022 world champion, who clinched the men’s doubles crown alongside Aaron Chia, changed his Instagram bio from “national player” to “pro badminton player”, prompting fans to question his future with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The update has led to online chatter, with some suggesting it could hint at a potential split in Malaysia’s leading men’s doubles partnership. Others have speculated that Soh may be considering a switch to compete independently outside the national setup.
However, Aaron’s Instagram profile remains unchanged, offering no indication of a similar move.
Sources within the badminton fraternity have downplayed the rumours, pointing out that both players are currently tied to BAM under contracts running until 2028, making any immediate departure unlikely.
For now, the duo remain focused on their upcoming campaign at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, scheduled from April 7 to 12, where they will aim to defend their title.
The last notable men’s doubles pair to leave the national fold were Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who turned independent in October 2024.
BAM has yet to comment on the speculation. Scoop has reached out to the association and is awaiting a response. — March 25, 2026
