KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched investigations into three individuals suspected of spreading false information alleging a hike in electricity tariffs across social media platforms.
In a statement today, MCMC confirmed that the misleading claims were circulated through Facebook, Threads, and WhatsApp, and had misused graphic elements belonging to a local news agency.
“Complaints received revealed that the content shared by the suspects was fabricated and capable of creating negative perceptions, anxiety, and public panic. Checks showed the material was edited from official Astro Awani content,” the commission said.
The probe is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
MCMC stressed that it views seriously any misuse of digital platforms to mislead the public with false information.
“Firm action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws. The public is reminded to act responsibly when using digital platforms and to refrain from uploading or sharing content that could disrupt social harmony and public order,” the statement added. – April 1, 2026
