KUALA LUMPUR – Soh Wooi Yik has firmly dismissed speculation over his future, stressing that he has no plans to leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and remains fully committed to both the national body and his long-time doubles partner, Aaron Chia.
The shuttler moved to calm concerns following a stir on social media last week, after he updated his Instagram bio to read “Pro Badminton Player”, which prompted some fans to question whether he was considering turning independent.
Addressing the issue, Wooi Yik clarified that the change was purely personal and did not signal any intention to part ways with BAM.
“I don’t think there’s anything I need to explain. Social media is personal to me and I didn’t mean anything by it. I just do what I feel is right for myself,” he told reporters when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today.
When pressed on whether he had ever considered leaving the national setup, the 28-year-old was unequivocal.
“There is no intention,” he said.
He added that the phrase “Pro Badminton Player” was simply a reflection of his approach to the sport, rather than an indication of any impending move away from BAM.
“Yes, it’s more about professionalism in how I perform on court,” he explained.
The brief update to his social media profile had sparked widespread speculation among fans, with some interpreting it as a sign that he might be preparing to compete independently outside the BAM structure.
However, such concerns appear unfounded, as the Aaron-Wooi Yik partnership, currently ranked world number two remains under contract with BAM through to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. – April 1, 2026
