KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into five individuals suspected of spreading false information about petrol and diesel price hikes on the social media platform Threads.
MCMC said three of the five individuals have been called in to provide statements to assist in the investigation.
“Based on complaints received, the content circulated by all individuals regarding fuel price increases was found to be false, misleading, and capable of causing public concern,” the commission said in a statement today.
Buletin TV3 has denied any involvement, saying the viral content was manipulated using its visual identity without authorisation.
MCMC added that the broadcaster had lodged a complaint, confirming the content did not originate from its newsroom but was produced by a third party.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC stressed that it views any misuse of social media platforms to mislead the public through false information as a serious offence.
“Firm action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws,” it said.
The public has also been reminded to exercise responsibility when using social media and to avoid misusing communication platforms in ways that could disrupt social harmony and public order. — April 2, 2026
