Presma denies directing price hikes, says 10%–30% figure reflects rising costs

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) has clarified that it did not instruct members to raise food prices, following a meeting with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).

The association said recent reports misinterpreted its statements, stressing that the widely cited 10% to 30% figure refers to rising operational costs, not menu price increases.

“The association has not issued any directive to increase selling prices as depicted in previous media reports,” its leadership said during a briefing with KPDN officials.

The meeting was attended by Presma President Datuk Mohammed Mosin Abdul Razak, Deputy President Muhibulla Khan Omar Khan, Vice President Razali Yusof, former President Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan, and several other committee members.

Presma explained that cost pressures stem from increases in raw materials, utilities and logistics, adding that its members are making efforts to absorb these expenses rather than pass them on to consumers.

The meeting, held at KPDN headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday, was convened in response to a notice issued under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

KPDN acknowledged the explanation but stressed the need for clear communication to avoid public confusion, while reminding the association to comply with anti-profiteering regulations.

Presma reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with the ministry, with both sides agreeing to maintain ongoing engagement to ensure price stability and fair practices across the sector. – April 2, 2026
