Former MCA President Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik dies at 82

Veteran politician and ex-Transport Minister remembered for decades of public service and leadership in Malaysian politics

KUALA LUMPUR – Former MCA President Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik has died, aged 82.

The passing of the long-serving Transport Minister was confirmed in a message sent to the trustees of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, where he served as Chancellor, reported The Star.

Born in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Ling graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Singapore before embarking on a career in public service.

He began his parliamentary career as the MP for Mata Kuching in 1974, retaining the seat in the 1978 and 1982 general elections, before moving to represent Labis from 1986 for four successive terms.

Over the course of his political journey, he held several senior posts, including Deputy Information Minister, Deputy Finance Minister, Deputy Education Minister, and most prominently, Transport Minister from 1986 to 2003.

Known for his pragmatic leadership and dedication to national development, Ling left a lasting impact on Malaysian politics and education through his decades of service. – April 4, 2026
