Insurance-linked tow truck operators stage strike over diesel costs

Service disruptions expected as insurers’ low payouts fail to cover rising fuel prices

KUALA LUMPUR – Tow truck operators across Peninsular Malaysia have launched a protest in response to soaring diesel prices and what they describe as unsustainable payment rates from insurers and service issuers.

Persatuan Wakil Takaful Malaysia (Perwatam) treasurer Syameem Ahmad confirmed the strike, noting that it is not confined to the Klang Valley but involves operators nationwide.

The protest began today and is expected to continue until Tuesday, with many operators refusing service calls.

“So, the reason is because what they get from the issuer is not affordable with the price of the oil,” Syameem said.

Around 20 towing companies are participating, he added, stressing that continuing work under current rates is financially unviable. Operators are now calling for a subsidy mechanism to offset rising fuel costs and maintain services.

“So right now, they are requesting for the subsidy to be set in order for them to operate,” he said.

The protest has prompted growing complaints from customers, particularly those dependent on insurance-linked towing services.

“We are getting a lot of complaints from our clients that when they call the operator, they don’t pick up and all of them don’t want to take the cases because of this,” Syameem said.

As a result, customers are often left to arrange their own towing, sometimes without reimbursement.

“So, what our clients have to face, they have to call by their own and all of that is being claimed. But right now, even being claimed, they don’t want,” he added.

At present, no official response has been received from the government regarding the operators’ demands. “Not sure yet,” Syameem said when asked.

The strike comes as diesel prices rise to RM6.72 per litre, up RM0.70 from last week, raising concerns about nationwide roadside assistance availability. – April 12, 2026
