Tow truck strike: Association urges immediate review of rates as diesel prices climb

Association warns outdated rates and rising fuel costs threaten roadside assistance and public safety

KUALA LUMPUR – The Muslim General Takaful Agents Association (Perwatam) has called for an urgent revision of towing service tariffs, saying outdated rates are putting operators under severe financial strain and disrupting roadside support.

Perwatam president Datuk Khairi Anuar Ahamd said the current towing rates “no longer reflect the actual cost of operations,” stressing that the situation cannot be allowed to continue.

“The failure to revise tariffs has affected operators’ ability to function effectively, resulting in delays in assistance, service disruptions, and increased safety risks for customers on the ground,” he said in a statement.

Speaking to Scoop, he noted that tow truck operators are the most impacted by the rising costs.

“The party that is really affected will be the tow truck operators themselves. But due to that, it will tarnish the good name of the agents and Takaful operators directly,” he explained.

Perwatam also urged the government to strengthen the diesel subsidy framework, saying stronger support is necessary to prevent the industry from collapsing under sustained cost pressures.

“More realistic policy support is crucial to ensure that the towing industry can continue operating and does not collapse under ongoing cost pressures,” Khairi added.

The association emphasised that any new regulations or guidelines introduced should remain temporary.

“All the new measures and guidelines taken by the respected authorities should be temporary until the oil price stabilises back,” he said.

Effective today, tow truck operators have begun a strike, refusing calls in response to the diesel price surge, which currently stands at RM6.72 per litre. – April 12, 2026
