KUALA LUMPUR – Sabah FC’s long-awaited domestic breakthrough was rewarded in style after the state government announced a combined RM700,000 bonus following their dramatic MFL Challenge Cup 2026 triumph over Penang FC at a packed Stadium Likas yesterday.
The home side clinched the title 4-3 on penalties after both teams finished level on aggregate following a tightly contested final that ended 1-1 over two legs.
The financial reward was confirmed by Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, comprising RM500,000 from the Sabah government, as announced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and a further RM200,000 from the Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Ministry.
Describing the victory as a significant milestone for football development in the state, Nizam said the achievement reflected Sabah FC’s steady progress and the collective effort behind their resurgence.
“This success is deeply meaningful for Sabah football. It is not just about lifting a trophy, but about the journey, the discipline, and the commitment shown by the players, coaching staff, and management,” he said in a Facebook post.
“We hope this victory will serve as a catalyst for further development in Sabah football and inspire more young people to take up the sport seriously. With the right support and continued dedication, we believe Sabah can go even further on the domestic stage.”
He also paid tribute to the supporters who turned up in force at Stadium Likas, creating an electric atmosphere that spurred the team throughout the final.
“The supporters were exceptional. Their energy and passion gave the team an added push, especially during the most intense moments of the match. This victory belongs to them as well,” he added.
On the pitch, Sabah FC dominated large portions of the encounter but were repeatedly tested by Penang FC’s disciplined defending and quick counter-attacks.
Despite creating several clear chances, neither side could be separated in normal and extra time, sending the tie to penalties.
Sabah held their nerve in the shootout to secure a 4-3 win, sparking celebrations among more than 20,000 home fans.
Meanwhile, former Harimau Malaya head coach Pau Martí Vicente also congratulated Sabah head coach Juan Torres Garrido on the achievement.
“Congratulations to you and your team,” he said in a brief but warm message on his Instagram, while also sharing Sabah FC’s triumph post.
“It is always good to see hard work being rewarded. I know how demanding the job is, and this is a well-deserved moment for Sabah FC and the coaching staff,” he added.
Pau Martí and Garrido previously worked together within the Harimau Malaya coaching set-up in 2024, and despite his current commitments with Spanish giants Barcelona, Pau Martí continues to follow developments in Malaysian football closely. – April 20, 2026
