Political influence must not shape MACC leadership: MCW

Organisation urges independent commission to oversee appointments

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) has urged that the appointment of the next Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner be conducted transparently and based on merit, as uncertainty looms over the agency’s leadership.

In a statement, MCW president Jais Abdul Karim emphasised that the matter extends beyond the individual to the credibility of the entire institution.

“The issue of appointing the MACC Chief Commissioner is not merely about an individual, but about the credibility of the institution,” he said in a statement shared on MCW’s Facebook group.

MCW also aligned with the view of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, that the appointment should not be politicised. The group added that any decision—whether renewing the current chief’s contract or selecting a new candidate—must prioritise integrity and public confidence.

“Therefore, any decision not to renew the contract or to make a new appointment must be based on integrity, track record, and public confidence, not political pressure or perception alone,” Jais added.

Addressing previous shareholding allegations linked to MACC leadership, MCW highlighted that transparency is crucial to maintaining public trust.

“The due process that has been carried out should be made public to ensure fairness,” he said.

The organisation warned that even unproven controversies could damage the credibility of enforcement agencies, noting that public perception plays a pivotal role. It also called for reforms, including a more open appointment process and stronger oversight mechanisms.

“Any new appointment (if it takes place) must go through a more open, merit-based process and be accountable to Parliament,” Jais stressed further.

MCW further urged authorities to accelerate institutional reforms, including creating an independent commission to oversee the appointment of the MACC Chief.

“Stop using the MACC as a political narrative tool and instead strengthen it as a truly independent, credible institution feared by corrupt individuals,” the group added.

Earlier reports stated that Sultan Ibrahim will appoint the next Chief Commissioner of the MACC. – April 23, 2026
