KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysia Super League (MSL) may be officially ranked among Asia’s upper-tier football competitions, but its market valuation paints a more nuanced picture of its standing compared with regional and continental rivals.

Data from football statistics platform Transfermarkt ranks the Super League 13th out of 34 Asian leagues, with an estimated total market value of around RM264 million. This places Malaysia third in the ASEAN region, trailing Indonesia’s Liga 1 and Thailand’s top flight.

Indonesia leads the regional market with a valuation of RM406 million, followed by the Thai League at RM375 million — more than RM100 million ahead of Malaysia.

At the continental level, the Saudi Pro League dominates with an astonishing RM5.24 billion valuation, while the UAE Pro League (RM1.68 billion) and Qatar Stars League (RM1.67 billion) follow closely. Japan’s J1 League is also above the RM1 billion mark, valued at RM1.43 billion.

Rounding out Asia’s top 10 leagues are China’s Super League (RM676 million), Iran’s league (RM615 million), South Korea’s K League 1 (RM568 million), Australia’s A-League (RM487 million), Uzbekistan’s Super League (RM449 million), and Iraq’s Premier League (RM440 million).

Despite persistent challenges such as refereeing controversies, salary arrears, and declining stadium attendance, the Super League is not considered a low-quality competition. Malaysian Football League (MFL) chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd highlighted this in a recent roundtable discussion, citing data showing the league ranked 11th in Asia out of 47 leagues.

“The data, reportedly sourced from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), also places Malaysia sixth among 22 East Asian nations and second within the Asean region,” he noted. – May 2, 2026
