KUALA LUMPUR — A former aide to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok was today charged over accepting a RM500,000 bribe related to community allocations to procure smart boards for schools.

Edmund Teoh Kheng Yaik, 40, pleaded not guilty to two charges – cheating and receiving the gratification – at the Sessions Court here before judge Suzana Hussin, Bernama reports.

The alleged offences took place two years ago, in which Teoh is accused of deceiving Kok into believing that two schools in Seputeh had applied for funding to procure smart boards, when 16 schools had submitted applications, according to the facts of the case.

Teoh is alleged to have misled Kok into allowing him to process the applications under the Mesra Rakyat programme.

The alleged cheating offence took place at Kok’s service centre at Sri Desa Entrepreneurs Park, Kuchai Lama, in June 2024.

It falls under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

On the charge of receiving gratification, Teoh is said to have received the RM500,000 bribe from a 37-year-old man as an inducement to help the latter obtain the supply contract for the smart boards.

The procurement would be done through a company owned by the man’s wife.

The exchange allegedly took place at a Shell petrol station in Kuchai Lama on Aug 12, 2024.

The offence is under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(1), which carries up to 20 years’ jail and a fine of at least five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Previous reports stated that the total allocation for schools’ procurement of smart boards is said to be worth around RM1.5 million. – May 11, 2026
