KUALA LUMPUR – The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has personally funded the construction of a Rukun Negara Monument Plaque and visitor benches at Dataran Selangor, located opposite the Selangor state flagpole, as part of efforts to strengthen awareness and appreciation of the national ideology.
In a statement issued after visiting the site today, Sultan Sharafuddin said the plaque, constructed and installed by the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR), was intended to remind Malaysians of the origins and significance of the Rukun Negara.
“With the completion of this Monument Plaque, I wish to revisit and remind the public of the history behind the birth of the Rukun Negara concept,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.

The Ruler said the idea of Rukun Negara emerged following the declaration of emergency after the May 13, 1969 racial riots, when the National Operations Council (MAGERAN), acting as the governing authority at the time, formulated the national ideology to strengthen unity among the country’s diverse communities.
Sultan Sharafuddin said he hoped visitors to Dataran Selangor, particularly younger generations, would take time to read and appreciate the principles of Rukun Negara.
“ I hope members of the public who visit Dataran Selangor, especially the younger generation, will read and appreciate these fundamental principles of Rukun Negara, which form the core foundation of unity among Malaysians,” he said.
The Selangor Ruler also called on elected representatives in the state to visit Dataran Selangor twice monthly to better understand and appreciate the principles inscribed on the monument.
“ I also call upon all Selangor state representatives to personally come to Dataran Selangor twice a month and read and understand the meaning of Rukun Negara as inscribed on this Monument Plaque,” he said.
Sultan Sharafuddin also specifically addressed Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki and former Selangor DAP exco Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew, urging them to regularly visit the site to better appreciate the principles of Rukun Negara and the importance of respecting the sovereignty of the royal institution and upholding courtesy and moral values. – May 19, 2026
