High Court rejects Cahya Mata’s ad-interim injunction against Mahmud Abu Bekir

KUCHING – The High Court in Kuching has dismissed an application by Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (Cahya Mata) seeking an ad-interim injunction to prevent its director, Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, and others from attending board meetings.

Judicial Commissioner Zaleha Mohd Yusuf handed down the decision after Mahmud’s counsel opposed the application, Bernama reported.

The company had sought the injunction pending a full inter-partes hearing in a lawsuit filed against Mahmud, which seeks various remedies. Cahya Mata had also requested that Mahmud be barred from making or causing statements to the media concerning the company, its subsidiaries, or any ongoing proceedings.

The court scheduled the next case management for June 15. Mahmud is required to submit his affidavit by May 29, while Cahya Mata must file its reply by June 12.

“Mention will be on June 15 for the defendant to update the court on whether there is any necessity to file further affidavits and to obtain further directions from the court,” Zaleha said.

Initially, the company applied for an ex parte injunction, but the court directed the matter to proceed inter partes.

Cahya Mata was represented by Alvin Chong, while Satinder Singh Sandhu appeared for Mahmud. The dispute stems from boardroom tensions following Mahmud’s redesignation from deputy chairman to director on the company’s board. – May 19, 2026
