Pas to decide on Bersatu ties ahead of Aidiladha

Party leadership expected to meet within days as tensions within Perikatan Nasional continue to simmer over alleged breaches of coalition solidarity

KUALA LUMPUR — Pas is expected to hold a meeting within the next few days to determine its position on its relationship with Bersatu following growing tensions within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

Party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the leadership would first reach an internal decision before bringing the matter to the PN leadership, local media reported.

“We will hold a meeting in the near future and then make a decision. It will be done within one or two days, before Hari Raya Aidiladha.

“Whether we hold a meeting among ourselves (Pas) first and then with Bersatu, we will see. (Possibly) a meeting with Pas first,” he told reporters after attending the 58th anniversary convention of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia on Saturday.

Also present were PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Gerakan president Dominic Lau and Gerakan secretary-general Wong Chia Zen.

Earlier, Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party would reassess its cooperation with Bersatu after several actions by the party led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin were viewed as violating the spirit of solidarity among PN component parties.

Abdul Hadi, who is also the Marang MP, said the decision stemmed from a series of actions by Bersatu that were deemed displeasing to Pas.

Most recently, he pointed to Bersatu’s move to sack several Kedah state executive councillors as well as Kelantan deputy state assembly speaker Datuk Mohamed Farid Mohamed Zawawi, all of whom were from Bersatu.

In response to Pas’ directive barring members from issuing statements on matters involving other parties without special approval, Takiyuddin stressed that the move was not intended to silence freedom of speech.

“There is freedom, but there is a proper way. If everyone speaks out, the situation will become even more chaotic. We need to have a vision and allow the leadership to decide,” he said. – May 23, 2026
