DAP pushes Negeri Sembilan snap polls as political uncertainty deepens

DAP says a fresh state election is the most practical route to break Negeri Sembilan’s political deadlock, warning that continued uncertainty could destabilise the administration despite temporary support for Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun

KUALA LUMPUR — DAP has openly backed dissolving the Negeri Sembilan state assembly and returning the mandate to voters, arguing that a fresh election may be the clearest way out of the political turmoil threatening the state administration.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Like said the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the state government could not be allowed to drag on indefinitely.

“If we continue like this, it will be difficult. There may be support now, but that support could be withdrawn at any time,” he was quoted as saying after attending an event in Seremban today.

“It is better for a state election to be held to return the mandate to the people.”

Loke said DAP had already conveyed its views to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun and had also publicly stated its position during the Pakatan Harapan convention in Johor last week.

“I am only making a suggestion, and the menteri besar must make the decision after consulting the top PH leadership, the prime minister, and subsequently obtaining the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan,” he said.

The remarks add to growing calls for a reset of the political situation in Negeri Sembilan, with Umno deputy president and deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan previously expressing similar views.

On Friday, Mohamad reportedly said dissolving the assembly would allow the people to decide who should govern the state.

The crisis erupted last month after all 14 Umno-Barisan Nasional assemblymen withdrew support for Aminuddin over his handling of a controversy involving four chieftains who allegedly sought to remove Negeri Sembilan ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

However, Umno’s central leadership later intervened and instructed its assemblymen to continue backing the state administration.

Despite that, uncertainty over Aminuddin’s political standing remains. Reports previously indicated Pakatan Harapan and Umno had agreed to postpone the state assembly sitting for six months, effectively delaying any attempt to test support for the menteri besar.

Once the assembly reconvenes, Aminuddin could still face pressure through a motion of no confidence or the defeat of a government bill — scenarios that may reignite questions over the administration’s stability – May 24, 2026
