KUALA LUMPUR — The government is rolling out a series of measures to support media practitioners as they navigate mounting challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) and ongoing economic uncertainty, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Speaking in conjunction with the upcoming Hawana 2026, Fahmi said the media industry is currently grappling with growing anxieties over job security and its long-term future amid rapid technological shifts.
“This year we are celebrating Journalists’ Day in an atmosphere where many may be worried about their jobs and their future as a result of AI and economic issues.
“But insya-Allah, on the government’s part, especially the Ministry of Communications, several matters are being looked into to assist friends in the media industry,” he said in a message issued for the celebration.
Fahmi stressed that the government, through the Communications Ministry, is actively assessing initiatives aimed at strengthening the resilience of media practitioners and safeguarding the sustainability of the industry.
He also underlined the importance of maintaining a strong and principled press, describing it as a fundamental pillar of Malaysia’s democratic framework.
“Free and ethical media are vital, not only for the country’s democratic system, but also for the future of Malaysia,” he said.
Themed “Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility”, this year’s Hawana celebration will be held at the PICCA Convention Centre @ Arena Butterworth in Penang on June 20 and is expected to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
About 1,000 media professionals from Malaysia and abroad are expected to attend the event, which aims to foster dialogue, exchange ideas and help shape the future direction of journalism.
May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists’ Day, marking the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu on May 29, 1939, in recognition of the contributions of media practitioners and veteran journalists to national development.
Organised by the Communication Ministry with the national news agency (Bernama) as implementing agency, Hawana serves as the country’s premier platform to honour the dedication and professionalism of the media community. – May 29, 2026
