KUALA LUMPUR — Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd (Astro) has announced the departure of its Group Chief Executive Officer, Euan Smith, who officially stepped down from his role on June 7, 2026, after a six-year tenure at the helm.
In a regulatory filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the content and entertainment powerhouse revealed that while the hunt for a permanent successor is underway, former chief Henry Tan will step back into the driver’s seat as interim GCEO, effective June 16, 2026. Tan is a familiar face to the group, having previously served as Astro’s GCEO from February 2019 until January 2023.
Tan joined Astro in 2008 as Chief Operating Officer and has long championed the production of local content.
He is widely credited with drawing Malaysian audiences back to cinemas in droves, thanks to hit Astro-produced blockbusters like Ola Bola, Paskal, Polis Evo, and The Journey.
“Tan will provide overall leadership to the company and be responsible for its performance and operations, supported by Astro’s executive leadership team,” the company stated in its announcement.
Meanwhile, Smith will not be cutting ties immediately. “Smith will continue to provide technical advisory assistance or support to the board until Dec 6, 2026,” the statement added.
The company expressed its appreciation to Smith for his leadership and contributions over the past six years, wishing him the best in his future endeavours.
According to Astro’s filing, Smith leaves his post holding 2.96 million shares, which accounts for 0.057% of the company’s total issued shares. Additionally, he retains an interest in over 48.35 million unissued ordinary shares under the company’s long-term incentive plan through performance share awards.
Following the announcement, trading of Astro’s securities was briefly halted at 9:00 AM today and resumed an hour later at 10:00 AM. As of last Friday’s market close, Astro’s shares stood at six sen, giving the company a market capitalisation of RM313.55 million. – June 8, 2026
