SEREMBAN — The Negeri Sembilan Palace does not recognise Tunku Datuk Seri Nadzaruddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar as the state’s new Yang di-Pertuan Besar, as his purported installation is invalid.
The state’s Pengelola Bijaya Diraja (Comptroller of the Royal Household) Datuk Azizi Mohamad Ali said the installation last Friday is not recognised under the state’s constitution, laws and customs.
“The title of 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar purportedly assumed by Tunku Datuk Seri Nadzaruddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar at the ceremony held at a hotel in Alor Gajah, Melaka, on June 5 has no legal effect,” Azizi said in a statement reported by Bernama.
By participating in the ceremony, Azizi said Tunku Nadzaruddin had also lost his hereditary title of Tunku Panglima Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
“in his attempt to accept the invalid title, he has effectively relinquished the hereditary title of Tunku Panglima Besar of Negeri Sembilan, which he previously held.
“As a result, there is no one currently holding the position of the hereditary title of Tunku Panglima Besar,” Azizi added.
Tunku Nadzaruddin’s “installation” was held in a hotel lobby amid the state’s crisis between its customary chieftains (Undangs) and the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir that began in April.
The dispute over custom and royal authority led to all 14 Umno state assemblyman withdrawing their support for Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun on grounds that he failed to uphold customs and royalty.
Negeri Sembilan’s legislative assembly was dissolved last Friday, paving the way for fresh state elections.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, meanwhile, has said that Tuanku Muhriz remains the legitimate ruler of Negeri Sembilan.
Previously, after the Undangs’ attempt to dethrone Tuanku Muhriz over unspecified misconduct, Aminuddin said such a move was invalid because one of the chieftains, Datuk Mubarak Dohak, had no legitimacy as he had been removed from his post. – June 9, 2026
