KUALA LUMPUR – Two Royal Malaysian Army personnel who were killed in an explosion during a military training exercise at the Hobart Camp firing range in Gurun, Kedah, today sustained severe injuries to the upper parts of their bodies.
Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Hanyan Ramlan said preliminary findings indicated that most of the injuries suffered by the victims were from the waist upwards.
He said police have opened an investigation paper and classified the case as a sudden death report (SDR).
“We will seek the cooperation of all relevant parties in conducting investigations at the scene. In addition, we will record statements from witnesses who were present during the exercise,” he was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Hanyan added that investigations are ongoing, including efforts to determine the exact number of personnel involved in the training exercise.
Earlier, the Royal Malaysian Army (TDM) confirmed that the incident occurred at 10.57am during a grenade-throwing exercise conducted as part of the Royal Engineer Regiment (RAJD) Combat Enhancement Training under the Second Malaysian Infantry Division.
Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar, 40, from the Sixth Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (6 RAMD), and Private Siti Khadijah Sungip, 24, from the First Squadron of the Royal Engineer Regiment (1 RAJD), sustained injuries in the explosion and were later pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Supreme Commander of the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Sultan Ibrahim, extended his condolences to the families of the two soldiers who lost their lives in the incident.
His Majesty expressed hope that their families would be granted strength and fortitude during this difficult time.
“Al-Fatihah for the two personnel who perished in this tragedy. May they be placed among the faithful and the martyrs,” His Majesty said in a statement shared on his Facebook page today.
Sultan Ibrahim also decreed that the Armed Forces conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the incident and ensure that all safety procedures are continuously reviewed and strengthened. – June 16, 2026
