KUALA LUMPUR – The International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) has suspended five Thai players and two coaches from all official sepaktakraw activities pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings arising from an incident during the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup final.
The decision was made by ISTAF’s disciplinary committee following a meeting on June 19 to review an incident involving Thailand’s third regu during the final against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on May 24.
In an official statement, ISTAF said the disciplinary proceedings stem from allegations that the Thai regu refused to continue the match despite being instructed to do so by match officials in accordance with the Laws of the Game and the competition regulations.
The five players charged are Wichan Temkort, Jakkrit Thinbangbon, Phutawan Sopa, Sittipong Khamchan and Chattuphon Siriart. Two coaches and the team manager have also been cited in the proceedings.
ISTAF said formal notices of the disciplinary action and charges had been served through the Thailand Sepaktakraw Association (TAT).
Each respondent has been given 14 days to submit a written response before the matter proceeds to a disciplinary hearing.
Pending a final decision, the disciplinary committee has imposed interim measures prohibiting all respondents from participating in, officiating at, coaching, managing or being involved in any ISTAF-sanctioned competitions, tournaments or official activities.
However, ISTAF stressed that the interim suspension does not constitute a disciplinary sanction.
Instead, it is an administrative measure aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the investigation process and ensuring the smooth conduct of competitions.
ISTAF secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Kader said all players, coaches and team officials competing in ISTAF events have a responsibility to respect the sport’s regulations and the authority of match officials.
“Sepaktakraw is built upon the values of respect, discipline, sportsmanship and integrity.
“The commencement of these disciplinary proceedings reflects ISTAF’s commitment to protecting the integrity of competition while ensuring that every respondent receives a fair and impartial hearing in accordance with the ISTAF disciplinary regulations,” he said.
Abdul Halim added that ISTAF would continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, governance and sportsmanship in addressing any issues that could undermine the reputation of the sport. – June 22, 2026
