KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia is targeting an estimated RM100 million in investments and sales through its first-ever participation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market (MIFA) 2026 in France, as the country seeks to strengthen its position as a competitive player in the global animation industry.

The Communication Ministry, through the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), said the projected returns are expected to come from potential co-production partnerships, animation services, creative content investments, intellectual property (IP) distribution agreements, and the entry of international productions into Malaysia via the Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI) programme.

In a statement today, FINAS said its maiden participation at MIFA 2026 marks a significant milestone for Malaysia’s creative industry and reflects the government’s commitment to expanding the global reach of local animation content.

The event, which runs from June 21 to 27 in Annecy, France, features the participation of 11 Malaysian animation companies.

“Malaysia’s presence at MIFA 2026 aims to promote local intellectual properties, explore co-production opportunities, expand business networks and strengthen relationships with international industry players,” the statement read

Widely regarded as the world’s largest animation festival and marketplace, MIFA brings together producers, investors, distributors, broadcasters, streaming platforms and creative industry professionals from around the globe.

FINAS said the platform provides a strategic opportunity for Malaysian companies to showcase homegrown animation content to international buyers and partners while enhancing the visibility of Malaysian creative talent.

The agency added that participation in the festival aligns with broader government efforts to boost the competitiveness of the local creative sector and increase exports of Malaysian creative content.

Beyond potential commercial gains, FINAS said the initiative would also enable local companies to build stronger international networks, attract foreign investment and improve the marketability of Malaysian animation products and services.

The participation comes as Malaysia continues to position itself as a regional hub for creative content production, with animation identified as one of the country’s key growth sectors within the digital creative economy. – June 23, 2026
