KUALA LUMPUR — Barisan Nasional (BN) Barisan Nasional in Johor has announced its full slate of candidates for the 16th Johor State Election, fielding a mix of incumbents, experienced politicians and new faces in its bid to win all 56 state seats.
The list, comprising 37 candidates from Umno, 15 from MCA and four from MIC, was unveiled by BN Johor chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi at the UMNO Johor liaison office in Johor Bahru, Bernama reported.
Onn Hafiz, who is also Johor Menteri Besar, said the selection of candidates was made following approval from BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He will defend the Machap seat, which he won in the 2022 state election.
Among the key names in the list is former health minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, who has been fielded in Pasir Raja. Adham, who also leads UMNO Tenggara, previously held the Pasir Raja seat for two terms from 2008 to 2018 and served as Tenggara MP across two separate terms.
Another notable omission is former Johor menteri besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad, who will not be defending the Benut seat. Instead, BN has nominated UMNO Malaysia executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan to contest there.
BN is retaining nine out of 10 former state executive councillors who contested in the 2022 election. The only exclusion is Khairin-Nisa Ismail @ Md On, who previously chaired the Johor Women, Family and Community Development Committee and served as Serom assemblywoman.
In his address, Onn Hafiz reminded all candidates that their selection was not a privilege but a responsibility that must be carried out with integrity.
He also urged them to campaign with moderation, decorum and wisdom in line with the values of Johor voters.
“To those who were not selected, I appeal that we continue together in this struggle. Our struggle is bigger than any individual or position,” he said.
