KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong is expected to make a decision on his future with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) within the next two weeks, with a move into the professional ranks understood to be among the options under consideration.

Sources revealed that discussions regarding the 26-year-old’s future have already taken place between Tze Yong and BAM’s coaching and management teams, although no final decision has been made.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Tze Yong has informed BAM of his intentions and has been given the time and space to carefully evaluate his next move before making a formal announcement.

“Tze Yong has shared his thoughts with BAM regarding the direction he wants to take in his career. Nothing has been finalised yet as he is still weighing all available options, including the possibility of leaving the national set-up to pursue a professional route.

“BAM understands the significance of the decision and has allowed him the opportunity to consider all aspects thoroughly before reaching a conclusion. Based on the latest discussions, an announcement is expected within the next one or two weeks,” the source told Scoop.

Tze Yong is currently undergoing rehabilitation following surgery for the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he sustained in July last year.

The setback came at a particularly unfortunate time, as he had only recently returned to competition after spending 14 months on the sidelines recovering from two back surgeries.

Following his comeback, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist competed in four tournaments — the Asian Championships, Taiwan Open, Thailand Open and Malaysia Masters before another serious injury halted his progress.

Tze Yong emerged as one of Malaysia’s brightest badminton prospects after winning silver at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

He went on to register several notable performances on the international circuit, including a memorable victory over Denmark’s two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in the second round of the 2023 All England Championships.

His best result on the BWF World Tour came later that year when he finished runner-up at the Arctic Open.

Among his other achievements are titles at the South Australia International Challenge in 2019, as well as the Poland Open, Belgium International Challenge, Scotland Open and Bahrain International Challenge in 2021.

However, his upward trajectory was interrupted by recurring injury problems that began during the 2024 Malaysia Open, where he first experienced back issues.

Since then, a succession of injuries has hampered his progress and limited his ability to rebuild momentum and re-establish himself among the world’s elite players.

The latest ACL injury has further delayed his return to full fitness, leaving uncertainty over the next chapter of a career once viewed as one of Malaysian badminton’s most promising success stories. – June 25, 2026.
