KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has been chosen as the permanent home of the Association of Pickleball Players’ (APP) Asia Headquarters, marking a significant milestone in the sport’s rapid expansion across the region.

The announcement comes ahead of the Leapmotor APP Penang Open 2026, which will be held from July 22 to 26 at Pickle By The Sea, Gurney Drive, Penang. The tournament will serve as the opening event of the newly launched APP Asia Tour and underscore the organisation’s long-term commitment to growing pickleball in Malaysia.

Beyond the on-court action, the tournament will feature interactive fan zones, premium hospitality experiences and community-focused activities designed to engage both newcomers and elite players.

The event is backed by title sponsor Leapmotor, one of China’s fastest-growing new energy vehicle (NEV) brands. Its partnership with the APP reflects a shared commitment to innovation, accessibility and community development.

Stellantis Asean Managing Director Isaac Yeo said the collaboration brings together two brands driven by innovation and performance.

“Stellantis is honoured to be part of the APP Penang Open 2026 through our all-electric Leapmotor brand, celebrating a partnership built on shared values of innovation, performance and forward-thinking ambition.

“As a technology-led NEV brand, Leapmotor combines the agility of a startup with cutting-edge engineering to redefine the future of mobility. These qualities closely reflect the spirit of pickleball, a sport driven by speed, precision and continuous evolution.

“By partnering with the APP Penang Open, we look forward to engaging with a vibrant and growing community while showcasing how intelligent, sustainable mobility can empower modern lifestyles,” he said.

The Penang tournament will also mark the official launch of the APP Asia Tour, established in response to the sport’s surging popularity across the continent.

Following the Penang stop, the tour will continue to China, Chinese Taipei, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and India throughout the remainder of 2026.

Meanwhile, leading pickleball equipment brand Selkirk announced it will establish the Selkirk Academy in Malaysia as part of its long-term investment in developing the sport locally.

The academy will offer structured training programmes, coaching clinics and player development opportunities for participants of all skill levels.

Selkirk Co-founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer Mike Barnes said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to growing the sport worldwide.

“We are passionate about growing the sport globally, and bringing Selkirk Academy to Malaysia alongside the APP Asia Tour is a natural evolution of that commitment.

“We are proud to invest directly in players, local clubs and the lifestyle that makes pickleball unique. Partnering with the APP in Penang allows us to expand our community footprint and empower the next generation of players,” he said. – June 29, 2026
