KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airports has begun the next phase of its ongoing Baggage Handling System (BHS) replacement programme at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, marking another step in its long-term effort to modernise the airport’s critical infrastructure.
The latest phase involves upgrading the baggage reclaim carousels serving international arriving passengers, with hoarding works already underway at Carousel E to facilitate the replacement of its baggage reclaim belt.
Similar works at Carousel F are scheduled to begin on Aug 31, with both upgrades expected to be completed by January 2027.
The airport operator said the programme is being carried out in carefully planned phases to ensure KLIA remains fully operational while the modernisation works progress.
Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said each completed phase would enhance the airport’s baggage handling capabilities and strengthen its long-term operational performance.
“The BHS replacement programme is being delivered in carefully planned phases to ensure KLIA remains fully operational while we modernise critical airport infrastructure. Each completed phase strengthens the system’s reliability, resilience and capacity, enabling us to better serve passengers and airline partners well into the future.
“Working closely with our airline and ground handling partners, we have put the necessary measures in place to minimise disruption throughout each phase of enhancement works. While passengers may experience some temporary congestion within the baggage reclaim hall, baggage delivery operations will continue as normal,” he said.
To support operations throughout the upgrade, Malaysia Airports will activate four temporary baggage collection areas whenever required to manage baggage volumes and ensure smooth baggage retrieval.
Clear signage will direct passengers to the designated collection points, while baggage operations personnel, ground handlers and customer experience teams will be stationed in the reclaim hall to assist travellers.
Malaysia Airports said all construction and hoarding installation works are being carried out in full compliance with operational safety requirements to safeguard passengers, airport personnel and daily airport operations.
The BHS replacement programme will continue in phases across other baggage reclaim carousels after the completion of the current upgrades, as part of Malaysia Airports’ broader strategy to enhance KLIA’s reliability, resilience and service excellence. – July 10, 2026
