KUALA LUMPUR – Penang has become the latest Malaysian destination to feature in a major Hollywood production, with actor Mark Wahlberg spotted filming scenes for his upcoming Netflix movie, The Big Fix.

Local reports said filming for the project began on Friday and is taking place at several locations across the state, including Lorong Kulit, City Stadium, Batu Kawan Stadium and Macallum Field, local media reported.

Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk A. Rajendran confirmed that the production is expected to continue for about two weeks, with local production company Biscuit Films overseeing coordination of the shoot in Malaysia.

The film, which also stars British actor Riz Ahmed, has attracted attention from residents after videos of Wahlberg filming in George Town circulated on social media.

A video shared by Facebook page Rakyat E-Hailing MY showed the Hollywood star standing beside a silver Perodua Kelisa, surrounded by production vehicles and crew members. The scene drew amusement and excitement among Malaysians, with many intrigued by the unlikely combination of an international movie star and the locally iconic compact car.

Beyond the film set, Wahlberg also shared a glimpse of his time in Malaysia with his Instagram followers.

In a video featuring Rev Fr Michael Raymond, parish priest of the Church of Divine Mercy, Wahlberg wrote: “Happy Sunday brother. God bless you. Stay prayed up, from Malaysia.”

The production’s arrival in Malaysia was also acknowledged by National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) chairman Datuk Hans Isaac, who commented on Wahlberg’s post: “Was nice to have met you on set yesterday and taking that photo with our Malaysian National Film Board team.”

The Big Fix reportedly centres on an Interpol officer with links to FIFA who uncovers a global match-fixing syndicate, leading to an international investigation.

Although the majority of the film is being shot in Sydney, Malaysia is among several countries selected for additional filming locations.

Apart from Wahlberg and Ahmed, the cast includes Singaporean actor Chin Han, Indian actor Vipin Sharma and Malaysian actress Nuha Jes Izman, who is based in the United States. – July 13, 2026
