KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to be discharged from the hospital today after undergoing successful medical treatment, according to his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Wan Azizah shared that the Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the nation for the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes throughout his hospital stay.
“PMX sends his regards and thanked everyone who has prayed for his health and recovery,” she said.
Dr Wan Azizah was speaking after officiating the Semarak Merdeka programme in conjunction with the 2026 National Month celebrations at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Bandar Tun Razak branch today.
Successful elective surgery
The Prime Minister was admitted to the hospital earlier this week to address an ongoing health issue. On Monday, he successfully underwent a minor, elective laparoscopic surgical procedure to treat a para-umbilical hernia.
Medical professionals confirmed that the procedure went smoothly without complications, paving the way for his swift recovery and planned discharge today.
The 79-year-old leader’s brief hospitalization comes amid an intensely demanding national and international schedule. While Anwar has generally maintained a clean bill of health and a rigorous daily work ethic since taking office as Prime Minister in late 2022, his health status remains closely watched by the nation.
Anwar previously underwent health check-ups and minor medical evaluations in recent years, consistently returning to his official duties shortly after.
Officials confirm that after a short period of rest following today’s discharge, the Prime Minister is expected to resume his official duties and lead upcoming key national agenda items. – August 12, 2026
