Malaysia recognises One China Policy, but seeks peaceful solution to Taiwan Dispute: Anwar

Prime Minister says Putrajaya respects China’s position and supports a peaceful approach to resolving tensions

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia remains committed to the One-China Policy despite facing criticism over its position, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said the policy was not a new stance, noting that Malaysia had upheld it since the administration of the country’s second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, Bernama reported.

“The One-China Policy has been in place since the late Tun Abdul Razak. So I think the policy remains and we practise it and of course we seek a peaceful path.

“That is what I gave as an example, in America hundreds of years ago when there was the American War of Independence, they did not allow the division of any territories,” he said after opening the TikTok Shop Summit Malaysia here today.

In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Anwar said Malaysia viewed Taiwan as part of China, stating: “It is one China. It is accepted by all.”

Elaborating on the matter, the Prime Minister said Malaysia respected China’s position on the Taiwan issue while maintaining that dialogue and a peaceful resolution were the best ways to address any disputes.

He said Malaysia’s One-China Policy was also consistent with the position recognised by the United Nations (UN).

“Of course we respect China’s stance but a peaceful path (is) the best. That is what is being done now but what policy does Malaysia recognise? One China is not new, it is agreed upon by the United Nations.

“That is why if you look at China, there is only one. The other entity is Taiwan. So it is not a new thing. It is just the way it is being pushed by Al-Jazeera, for example, that may cause a negative reaction,” he said. — August 20, 2026
