KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s inability to keep Ireland at bay proved their undoing as a string of defensive lapses condemned the Speedy Tigers to a 7-4 defeat at the 2026 Men’s Hockey World Cup, leaving national coach Brendon Carolan demanding a much sharper response against South Africa tomorrow.
Carolan said Malaysia made life difficult for themselves by conceding too many easy goals early in their ninth-to-16th placing match, with their attacking output ultimately unable to compensate for a defence that was repeatedly exposed.
“I think we’re very disappointed with the performance today. We expected more from this group, but conceding too many easy goals early in the game made the match very difficult to recover.
“If we’re disappointed with the result against a team ranked among the top 10 in the world, then that shows where we are at the moment,” he told Scoop when contacted.
Malaysia found the net four times, with Faizal Saari scoring from open play in the 55th minute, while Azimuddin Syakir Kamaruddin (29th), Amirul Hamizan Azahar (36th) and Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal (41st) converted penalty corners.
However, Ireland were far more clinical, scoring seven times through Jonathan Lynch, Matthew Nelson, John McKee and Benjamin Walker at the Belfius Hockey Arena.
For Carolan, the defeat underlined a simple but pressing problem: scoring goals will count for little if Malaysia continue to give opponents easy openings at the other end.
“For us, the main objective now is to get a positive result against South Africa and raise our standard of performance.
“Defensively, we weren’t good enough. We managed to score goals, but we have to become much better at defending,” he said.
Malaysia will now turn their attention to South Africa in another ninth-to-16th placing match at 5.30pm tomorrow, with Carolan expecting another demanding test.
South Africa have already shown their credentials at the tournament, holding Australia to a draw and beating France.
“South Africa are a very good team. They drew with Australia and beat France today. They have a good group of players.
“We had a good Test series against them before, so we know each other quite well.
“They also have two of the best players in the world in the Cassiem brothers. It will be a good test for us, but ultimately, that doesn’t matter. We have to be capable of beating them,” he said. – August 22, 2026
