KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor may declare a special public holiday if its contingent seals the overall championship title at the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) after a commanding campaign as hosts.
Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee Chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the proposal would be reviewed once the final medal tally is confirmed tomorrow, before being presented to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari for consideration.
However, Najwan cautioned the state’s athletes against becoming complacent despite Selangor being in a strong position to emerge as overall champions.
“We are on track to become the overall champions, but there are still about 90 gold medals up for grabs from today until tomorrow.
“So, we have to remain focused and go after every remaining medal. The states below us have around 40 gold medals, and if they were to win a large share of the remaining 90, they could still overtake Selangor.
“That is why we cannot be overconfident. We are on track, but our athletes must remain focused,” he told reporters during a press conference in Shah Alam today.
Najwan said Selangor had already achieved its initial target of winning 80 gold medals after securing victory in the women’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang team event at the MPAJ Convention Centre in Ampang Jaya.
The hosts defeated Penang 3-1 to claim the milestone gold medal.
The achievement holds special significance for Selangor as the state last reached the 80-gold milestone when it hosted Sukma in 1998, the same year it went on to become overall champions.
“The last time Selangor won 80 gold medals was when we hosted Sukma in 1998.
“Twenty-eight years ago, we became overall champions on home soil with 80 gold medals.
“God willing, we will be able to repeat that achievement with more than 80 gold medals. Congratulations to everyone,” he said.
Najwan added that medal-winning athletes would receive their incentives after the conclusion of the games.
The 2026 Sukma Selangor, which began on Aug 15, will end tomorrow, with the closing ceremony scheduled at Aneka Walk in Section 14.
The Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, is expected to attend the ceremony alongside Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Amirudin.
The Para Sukma Games will follow from Sept 5 to 14. – August 23, 2026
