KUALA LUMPUR — Police have arrested five local men aged between 19 and 30 over a brawl outside the Esperance Pudu nightclub that went viral on social media, with all five suspects found to have previous records linked to violent crime and drug offences.
Wangsa Maju police chief Annas Sulaiman said the suspects, believed to have been directly involved in the incident, were arrested following information received by police.
“Checks on their records found that all the suspects arrested had previous records relating to violent crime and drug offences,” Annas said in a statement today.
He said police also seized a black Perodua Myvi believed to have been used during the incident.
All five suspects have been remanded for five days, from August 31 to September 4, to assist in investigations.
Earlier, a 38-second video went viral on social media showing a car being driven at high speed before crashing into another vehicle parked by the roadside.
A group of men then allegedly went on a rampage, smashing the car’s windows with helmets.
A fight subsequently broke out among those involved, with the incident sparking concern among members of the public on social media.
Annas said police detected the video, which had been uploaded on Facebook, at about noon on August 30.
Checks found that the incident took place outside the Esperance Pudu nightclub in Kuala Lumpur, he said.
“Initial investigations found that the fight was caused by a misunderstanding between several individuals, which subsequently escalated into a major fight outside the club,” he said.
Following the incident, police opened an investigation paper under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 148 for rioting while armed with a weapon, and Section 427 for mischief.
Annas said a person convicted under Section 307 of the Penal Code could face up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
Meanwhile, police are intensifying efforts to track down other suspects who remain at large.
Annas urged members of the public not to speculate or engage in provocation that could interfere with the police investigation.
