Grab Malaysia launches Kid-Friendly rides, offering families safer, more convenient options

Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta) provides booster seats for children aged 4 to 12, with participation from Koopers and MIROS

KUALA LUMPUR — Grab Malaysia has introduced Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta), a new ride-hailing feature aimed at making travel safer and more convenient for families with children aged four to 12.

The service, introduced in accordance with safety guidelines from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), allows families to book 6-Seater rides equipped with a dedicated booster seat.

The service is generally available for children aged four to 12, with a limited fleet equipped with booster seats supplied by Koopers for children aged seven to 12 on GrabEV Exec rides. Driver-partners operating the service have also been trained to manage the use of child restraint systems.

Grab Malaysia Executive Director Rashid Shukor said the initiative was aimed at addressing one of the practical challenges faced by parents when travelling with young children, having to carry bulky child seats.

“Families should be able to travel with their children with greater peace of mind, without managing the hassle of carrying heavy and cumbersome child seats.

“With Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta), we hope to make it easier for families to travel light by offering dedicated booster seats.

“This reflects a commitment we share with the Ministry of Transport, with MIROS, and with partners like Koopers, to ensure that when families travel, they travel safely, and that children are never an afterthought on the road,” he said.

Child restraint systems (CRS) have been mandatory in Malaysia since Jan 1, 2020, although adoption remains low.

MIROS observational research has highlighted the need to raise awareness of child restraint systems and ensure that parents and caregivers use them consistently and correctly.

MIROS Director-General Associate Professor Ir Ts Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak said protecting children on the road required a shared responsibility.

“Research has found that booster seats reduce injury risk by 45 per cent for children aged four to eight compared with seat belts alone.

“MIROS’s CRS guidelines emphasise selecting a suitable restraint for the child’s size and installing it correctly.

“We welcome this initiative to make child restraints more accessible to families using ride-hailing services and encourage their correct use on every journey,” she said.

How to book Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta)

The Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta) feature is currently available through Advance Booking only for airport trips to and from KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Grab said the service would be rolled out progressively across the wider Klang Valley before expanding to Penang and Johor Bahru.

To access the feature, users need to:

1.Open the Grab app and tap “Car”.

2.Select the “Advance Booking” tile.

3.Schedule their preferred pick-up time.

4.Enter the airport pick-up or drop-off location.

5.Select Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta) under Standard 6-Seater or Grab EV Exec.

For Standard 6-Seater bookings, one booster seat is available for an additional RM10, for children aged four to 12.

Meanwhile, Koopers Boost Fix booster seats are available as a free value-added feature on Grab EV Exec rides.

Grab said the initiative forms part of its broader safety ecosystem, which also includes features such as AudioProtect and Women-Only Rides (Beta), as it continues efforts to improve safety across its platform. – October 6, 2026
